STOP ASKING AI TO WRITE STUFF: 5 Higher-Value Ways Law Firms Should Actually Be Using AI
“Write me an email...”
“Draft a blog post...”
“Summarize this document…”
Those are useful ways to use AI.
They’re also just scratching the surface.
The biggest opportunity for law firm owners isn't getting AI to write faster. It's using AI to find problems, improve decisions, capture knowledge, uncover opportunities, and build better systems.
So instead of asking AI to produce another first draft, try putting it to work on the business itself.
Here are five places to start.
1. Make AI Find the Bottleneck
Give AI a rundown of how a recurring process actually works in your firm—from new-client intake to opening a matter to billing and collections.
Don't clean it up first. Tell it what really happens.
Then ask:
“Analyze this workflow. Where are the bottlenecks, unnecessary handoffs, duplicated work, delays, and tasks that could potentially be automated?”
Then follow with:
“If I could improve only ONE part of this process, which would have the greatest impact—and why?”
Now you're not using AI to save five minutes writing an email.
You're using it to potentially redesign how work gets done.
2. Turn Your Best Employee Into a System
You probably have someone in your firm who just knows how things work.
That's valuable.
It's also dangerous.
Have AI interview that person about a recurring process. Let it ask questions about what they do, what exceptions they encounter, what mistakes people make, and how they make judgment calls.
Then ask AI to turn that conversation into a:
Process → Checklist → SOP → Training Guide
Suddenly, institutional knowledge isn't trapped inside someone's head.
You're starting to build a business that can teach itself how to operate.
3. Let AI Find Out Why You're Losing Prospects
Most firms analyze the clients they sign.
Try analyzing the ones they don't.
Take appropriately anonymized information from lost leads and consultations that didn't convert. Remove confidential or identifying information before using any AI system unless your firm's approved tools and policies permit otherwise.
Then ask AI to look for patterns:
What objections keep appearing? Where are prospects hesitating? What questions aren't being answered? At what point are we losing them?
You can then compare those patterns with successful conversions.
You may discover that your marketing problem isn't traffic at all.
It might be what happens after the phone rings.
4. Ask AI to Attack Your Strategy
This is essentially the Red Team approach we've talked about—but applied to bigger decisions.
Before launching that new practice area, hiring another attorney, increasing your marketing spend, or opening another office, explain your thinking to AI.
Then ask:
“Assume this plan fails spectacularly 12 months from now. What are the five most likely reasons why?”
Follow with:
“What assumptions am I making that I haven't actually proven?”
That's a radically different use of AI.
You're not asking it to agree with your idea.
You're asking it to try to break it before the market does.
5. Have AI Interview YOU
This may be the most valuable one.
Pick a business problem you've been struggling with and tell AI:
“Don't give me a solution yet. Interview me like an experienced business consultant. Ask me one question at a time until you have enough information to identify what I may be missing.”
Then answer honestly.
You may find that the value isn't in AI's answers at all.
It's in the questions you hadn't thought to ask.
That can expose assumptions, blind spots and opportunities that are difficult to see when you're buried in the day-to-day operation of the firm.
The Real AI Opportunity Isn’t Writing Faster
There's nothing wrong with using AI to draft an email in 30 seconds.
Do it.
But that's probably not where the greatest value is.
For a law firm owner, AI has the potential to become a process analyst, brainstorming partner, devil's advocate, knowledge-capture tool, and strategic sounding board.
And that leads to a much more interesting question than:
“What can AI write for me?”
Ask:
What can AI Help Me SEE That I’m Not Seeing Now?
Because the firms that benefit most from AI may not simply be the ones producing work faster.
They may be the ones using it to build a smarter, more scalable—and ultimately more valuable—business.
